South Indian Recipe – Sambhar – Rph at Work – Guest Blog

I really love South Indian food. So today I am going to share my favorite dish which goes along with any south-indian entree Sambhar. Its a typical South Indian thick lentil soup and is a delight to have steaming hot sambhar on a cold winter day. It is also healthy as a lot of vegetables goes into it and not a lot of fat.

Before I move along with the recipe I would really like to thank Saumya for letting me the guest writer today. I have tried out few recipes from your blog and they turned out great. Although my blog does not talk to food recipe I am food lover. Although in coming weeks I will try to share more food recipe on my site.

Sambhar recipe

I and my husband really like this Sambhar recipe. Hope you like it too. I will includes recipe of Sambhar Masala paste here too. It really tastes different than the Sambhar masala pack you get it in any Indian grocery store.

Sambhar masala ingredients:

Batch 1

1 tsp peppercorns

2 tsps coriander seeds

2 tsps chana dal

5 Dried red chilies

2 tsps Rice

1 tsp Cumin seeds

Sambhar

1 tsp Fenugreek seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds

4 cardamoms

3 cloves

1 cinnamon

Batch 2

1 tsp oil

4 cloves of garlic

choopped ginger

1 cup grated coconut

5 curry leaves

 

Method to make Sambhar Masala

First, heat the pan on a lower heat, put all dry ingredients of batch 1. Dry roast them for 10 minutes till it gets golden brown. Put it in a mixer.

Second step, put oil in pan. Wait until it gets warm then put second batch of ingredients. roast them for couple of minutes. Put it in a same mixer with batch 1.

Add some water for mixing. Mix it till it comes to paste.

Sambhar Ingredients

2 cups boiled and smashed toor dal

2 chopped tomatoes

1 chopped onion

1 tsp cut green chilies

½ cup cut opu

½ cup cut carrot

½ cup green peas

½ cup cut cauliflower

½ cup cut radish

½ cup cut potatoes

1 cup tamarind paste

½ cup jaggery

salt to taste

1 tsp tamarind

2 tsps red chili powder

1 tbsp oil

Water

cilantro to garnish

 

Method to make Sambhar

First, take the big pan. Heat oil in the pan. Put all vegetables (2 chopped tomatoes,1 chopped onion,1 tsp cut green chilies, ½ cup cut opu, ½ cup cut carrot, ½ cup green peas, ½ cup cut cauliflower, ½ cup cut radish, ½ cup cut potatoes) in the pan. Now put all spices (1 cup tamarind paste, ½ cup jaggery, salt to taste, 1 tsp tamarind, 2 tsps red chili powder) in pan. Mix them well. Now add 1 glass of water. Now add 1 tbsp of Sambhar masala past that we made before. Cover the pan and let vegetables cook for 15-20 minutes until they are cooked. Now add toor dal. let it boil for another 15-20 minutes.

Sambhar is ready to serve. You can garnish with some cilantro. Sambhar can go well with Idli, Dosa, Mendu vada, upma or Uttapam.
