Turmeric: Health benefits

Widely used in Indian cooking, turmeric is an ingredient that adds color to any preparation. Turmeric has a very mild taste, and I had often wondered if there were other benefits to adding turmeric to our food. This is what my research yielded:

  • Turmeric contains components that block cancer causing enzymes
  •  It is a powerful antioxidant
  • It may even be able to treat some types of cancer

  • Dr. Randy J. Horwitz, the medical director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine has written a white paper on the health benefits of turmeric, where he states “Turmeric is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories available.”
  • An old remedy for cuts is to cover the wound with turmeric to block bleeding. This anti-inflammatory and antiseptic property has since been established by many studies.
  • It has been recommended as a remedy for joint pain.
  • It is known to have great health benefits over the long term.

So make sure you continue to add turmeric to your food, and stay healthy!
